Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Reiterates his Commitment to Address the impacts of the Phub Project and also Combat GALAMSEY

The Minister Hon. Armah-Kofi Buah Reiterated his committed to address the Petroleum Hub Development project and also combat Galamsey. He reiterated this commitment to the delegation of Coalition of Concerned Nzema Youth.

On Wednesday 12th February 2025, a delegation from the Coalition of Concerned Nzema Youth met Hon. Armah-Kofi Buah at his office at the Parlaiment House and engaged him as a member of Parliament from an Nzema constituency and also as the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources.

The Delegate was led Engineer Ndede Kojo, a leading member of the Coalition of Concerned Nzema Youth. The delegation discussed the potential negative impacts of the Petroleum Hub Development Project (Phub) in the Jomoro Municipality of the Western Region of Ghana. The meeting also discussed the impacts of Galamsey which is destroying parts of the Nzema land including water bodies and fisheries resources in the area.

Mr. Kwadwo Kyei Yamoah, the Executive Director of HELP Foundation Africa who was part of the delegation as the Technical and Financial support lead to the coalition shared insights to the impacts of the Phub Project and Galamsey. He explained that the Phub project is expected to cover about 20,000 acres which has been compulsorily acquired, and the project is expected to directly affect about 23 communities and over 70,000 farmers. He explained that the PHub has potential negative impacts on local livelihoods, food security, employment and the general wellbeing of over 240,000 persons to be affected.

The delegation also emphasized that illegal mining “Galamsey” is another major problem in the area, that is contributing to deforestation, pollution of water resources, contamination of fishes and leading to soil infertility, Health challenges, etc.

The Minister Hon. Armah-Kofi Buah reiterated his committed to address the impacts of the Petroleum Hub Development and also combat Galamsey with implementation of effective strategies.
